Perception: You can’t win in Arizona

Kurt WarnerKurt Warner is back like the mythical  Phoenix - resurrecting his Hall of Fame career and giving fans in the Sun Devil state something to really worship.  Not since ‘Jake the Snake’ have Phoenix fans had a decent, fearless, strong-armed passer of a QB to rally behind.  Matt Leinart did not exactly dazzle when he was in there. So Kurt is back and reminding us all that he, Kerry Collins  and Brett Favre are aging, but not at all dead!

What makes this really special is that it’s been 9 years since Kurt won his last MVP. That is like 3 careers ago in the annals of a typical NFL player’s longevity.  The Cards have not won a MNF game in 20 years either. Think about that!

Each team gets at least 1 MNF game (or at least they used to) per season by rule.  Prime time once a year for 20 years and this team was never more than a dim bulb. Until now. Read the rest of this entry »

Perception: MLB has too much integrity to further change the playoff format

I saw a couple things in the papers over the weekend, on TV and in some op-ed pieces online that got me thinking about a lot of (other) things. Mainly, records - personal ones and team ones.

I am not sure if I am a record guy or not, but I know I used to be. I think I gave up on records mainly because I think I have evolved as a sports fan and only care about the wins and losses, or is it because they’ve become meaningless in today’s world?  Read the rest of this entry »

It’s Time To Upgrade MLB’s Umpires

If any of you out there are watching this world series closely what have you noticed?  I can’t help but be biased for the underdog Rays here but does anyone else think these home plate umpires are awful?

I was explaining to my wife last night how umpires are supposed to remain anonymous and go unnoticed and just keep things fair between two teams.  It is naive on my part, I know.  The refs and umps in all sports take liberties that sway the outcomes of so many games that it gets unfair.
